God of Vengeance
Hindl (Stacey Linnartz) weighs and considers in the foreground as secret lovers Rivke and Manke (Leanne Agmon and Elizabeth Stahlmann) plot their escape. Ansky’s masterpiece, GOD OF VENGEANCE, was part of our “burned and banned” season, and although it’s famous for having landed its cast and producers in jail on obscenity charges in the twenties (it features the first onstage lesbian kiss), the play is a powerful story in its own right. Although set in a Jewish brothel in the early 1900s, it plays with the thrilling speed and inevitability of Greek tragedy. Stacey, Leanne and Elizabeth are three of the gutsiest, most gifted actresses I’ve ever worked with.
